P0rtal .001 with Nymph.mp3
Recent sculpture, made from 100% recycled material, to create a fantastical insect.
I was given a given a brief to respond to of 'p0rtal' and the idea of making the explorer of the portal feel small as if they're exploring a forest for the first time as a small beetle. The budget was small, and I was inspired by recycling of waste, I watched some interested youtube documentaries, including Thomas Dambo, who makes huge recycled troll sculptures to protect nature.
I went on an expedition around the warehouse district where I live, where theres an abundance of strange objects left by previous housemates or have someone ended up there. Without a clear vision of what i was looking for, I found a bike helmet and saw the body of beetle. Then the rest I constructed from wire, paper mache and wheat paste.
The beetle was bought to life, I call him casper. I channelled a muted colour palette and iridescent shimmer to paint him, and then added black glue gun details. this made him look like a insect, alien hybrid, which I love
- I imagine him crawling out the sea to the land, Delicate and tough, gnarly and beautiful. These contradictions are true for all insects, which is why they’re beautiful totems for our human experience.
The exhibition itself was a beautiful celebration of creativity, and truly one of the reasons I love living in London, we all encourage each other to take up space, express ourselves and be fearlessly creative. The place was buzzing. Huge shoutout to Nymph! And check out her website and online store; Garm Farm 🕸🐇🖤🖤🖤
