Swarm - Installation 10/2023

Swarm - Installation 10/2023

Installation piece created in October last year for TAA - temporary autonomous art; a group working with squatters and derelict spaces, filling them with art and performance for a weekend. A truly amazing organisation !

This one was special, situated in the Diorama - in Regent’s Park, a stunning building with an internal open circular (!!) structure you can see from every level. At the base of this was the shrine to loss, a beautiful memorial for those we have lost.

This weekend really resparked my creative love and flow, after being stuck in a bit of a slump from finishing my illustration degree in 2022. Education was never really for me, and I found myself making myself smaller to fit into the tutors boxes. TAA is the opposite to this, pure creative expression with no boundaries, straight from the get go there’s all sorts of people there and, everyone is encouraged to make and get involved. The atmosphere this creates is truly special, to sort of place which’ l make you love life and what we can do when we work together. It didn’t matter what medium you chose, what art you made, just that you were there making it.

I used my textile insects, created for the end of my degree as part of a ‘rooted rug’ around the base of a tree - in this context I didn’t plan out any of the piece, just knew I wanted to use the window spot. I started creating this marking making from a central circle, which looked like more insects. From here I got into flow and the whole piece was assembled over one night. And swarm was made.

I left filled with inspiration and went home to paint the walls of my warehouse..
